#162: Dark Corners

Thursday, September 19th, 7:30pm at Barrel O’ Fun and on Twitch

This month we peek into the dark corners of the mind with talks about killers and asylums.

“Parricidal Tendencies: What Drives Children to Kill Their Parents?” by Grace Sydney Pham

Parricide, defined as the killing of one’s mother or father, accounts for 2% of homicides in North America. There is a complex interplay between mental health, the life stage of the murderer, family dynamics, and the greater societal fabric that makes each documented parricide case unique, from Charles Whitman to Jennifer Pan.

Grace Sydney Pham is a general psychiatrist who, at times, wishes they pursued forensics training, but has too large of an online footprint to make it work.

“Occasionally Chained: Institutional Mental Health Care through the Lens of a 19th- and 20th-Century Pastor” by Kellye Kosanda

It’s 1910: Fresh off the heels of a prominent role in a labor strike, you endure a mental health crisis. Where do you go from here? (Spoiler: It involves a chronically-underfunded state hospital, and you’ll be there for the rest of your life.)

Kellye, a decade-long Austin resident, enjoys cycling, roller skating, genealogy, and curating her lamp collection. She leads social bicycling rides and occasionally teaches yoga.
